Baseball Playoffs

First of all why the hell do you play 162 games and then only 4 teams from each league make the playoffs? Baseball needs to add at least 2 more teams to each league. And yes if they had this in place the GIANTS would have made the playoffs this year.
Short prop:
6 best teams from each league into playoffs.
Seeds 1 and 2 get a bye first round.
Division winner 3 plays weakest wild card that is from different division.
Other 2 wild cards play each other. Basically make baseball playoffs the exact way NFL playoffs work but baseball only has 3 divisions ala the NFL 10 years back.

Playoff Predictions:
Angels over the Red Sox: Boston has better pitching and has dominated angels in the past. Angels have homefield and are due a first round win. Angels in 4.

Yankees over Twins: Jeter is playing unreal, Arod didn't choke in the first playoff game, the rotation is solid and the offense is too good. Yankees in 3.

Cardinals over Dodgers: I made this pick before Holliday's dam error and probably should change it but there is no reason the slumping dodgers should win this series. Cardinals in great comeback in 5!

Rockies over Phillies: I am not really sure about this series. Rockies have been slumping a little bit at end of season but Phillies have not really wowed me all season. Phillies have better rotation but that should not matter in Coors.

Yankees over Angels- 6
Rockies over Cardinals- 6
Yankees over Rockies - 5

3 Weeks done time for some NFL Power Rankings

1. Ravens- Nasty D and Surprisingly good Offense. McGahee is playing out of his mind and Flaco is continuing to play no mistake football. Reed and Lewis continue to punish offenses. I expect the Ravens to crush the Pats this week.
2. Colts- Peyton is back to business. Wayne wants to break 1800 yards. Solid defense and winning experience. Colts will walk to AFC South crown.
3. Vikings- Escaped SF barely but the combination of great pass rush, AP, Harvy, and Taylor makes this team dangerous. But expect a horrible game from Brett Favre soon because he is getting tempted to start slinging.
4. Saints - Bills locked up Brees last week. Offense is not the issue but can the Saints stop the top 3 teams. Need to prove that before moving up.
5. Eagles- Kolb, Vick, Garcia and then they have a starter McNabb then you throw in Hank, Westbrook, and McCoy and you got the most fun team to watch in Football.
6. Giants- Eli looks like he has found some new targets but without Plaxico I think the Eagles squeak out the East.
7. Jets- Rex Ryan's a genius and best defensive coach in game. But with Rookie Qb and one dimensional offense the Jets will not be able to crack the top 5 this year.
8. 49ers- Losing on the last play and not passing on 3rd down and Win. This team is underrated but cannot let a close on stop the momentum. Expect to see Shaun Hill to Vernon Davis all season. Frank Gore injury hurts a lot.
9. Packers- Packers are looking good but have not faced a great team yet. Rodgers will have another big year and Central showdown is going to be great.
10. Falcons- Turner has not picked it up yet. The team is solid but without big numbers from Turner it will be hard for the Falcons to keep pace with the Saints.
11. Patriots- The defense is completely gone, Brady is not making the throws he usually makes. I would not be surprised if Pats go .500 this season.
12. Chargers- Rivers looks good but LT is hurt again and the Chargers are having another slow start to the season.
13. Bengals- Palmer is starting to look like the old Carsen. Ochocinco is making plays but without a solid running game and defense it will be hard for the Bengals to place higher than the Steelers and Ravens.
14. Cowboys- Romo is not taking care of the ball and the team does not look well coached. Phillips needs to go because for the last 3 years this team should have been dominating the NFC.
15. Bears- Cutler winning a couple 4th quarter close games but needs some help from Receivers. Without Big U in the middle this team lacks the swagger and scare factor.
16. Broncos- This team is 3-0 beating off on some of the worst teams in the league. Expect this team to be at .500 very soon.
17. Steelers - No P Malu and the Steelers are hurting. This team is definitely a top 10 talent and will bounce back but the D needs to step up until Troy is back.
18. Texans - Andre Johnson and the Offense is great but will they stay healthy and can they make enough stops to win a game.
19. Jaguars- Other than Jones-Drew this team has a bunch of raw talent that still needs a year or two.
20.Cardinals- Warner is looking decent but with no running game and defense slowly disappearing Cardinals will have tough time repeating in the West.
21. Seahawks- Starting Qb down, horrible run defense leads to another mediocre season.
22. Bills- Owens got the key to Buffalo when he joined the Bills. Now he is finding out no one wants that key and Buffalo is going no where.
23. Panthers- Top ranked 0-3 team but Mister Jake is killing this team single-handedly. Do they even have a backup?
24. Titans- Don't have any pass defense, Kerry Collins has lost all the magic. Tough schedule but expect to see Mister Young soon.
25. Dolphins- 0-3 and no starting QB I am giving them one more chance because I have faith in the wildcat.
26. Lions- Calvin Johnson, decent D, QB learning on the job, and they WON a game. Things turning around in Detroit.
27. Redskins- Jim Zorn will see the door soon.
28. Raiders- Why did they let Garcia go? J Russell is horrible. Raiders got a D but also a QB who throws with 25% accuracy.
29. Rams- Remember when Stephen Jackson and Marc Bulger were good? If they win 3 games this year I will be surprised.
30. Chiefs - Haven't watched in a game this year just know their garbage.
31. Browns - 2 Qbs- 4 interceptions and they select the Qb that threw three interceptions as the starter.
32. Buccaneers - No Gruden, No Qb, No Wins

Saurabh's NFL Predictions

Starting up my annual NFL Predictions which are 40% knowledge 60% bias which means as always the Niners will win the Superbowl this year!

Division Analysis
NFC North
First of all I hate Brett Favre and I can write entire post about how he thinks he is better then the game and will fade at the end of the year when the Vikings need him the most. Lions will win a game this year but not get more than 2. Expect big seasons from Ryan Grant and Aaron Rodgers. Vikings will start strong and have the pieces to be a contender but Brett Favre will choke and be hurt near end of season. I love Cutler and he gives Bears an offensive threat at all times to go together with a strong defense. I am picking Bears to win the division but expect Packers and Vikings to be in hunt entire year.

Lions 2-14
Packers 9-7
Vikings 8-8
Bears 10-6

NFC South
The Bucs are the only team in this division without playoff hopes. The Saints need to stay healthy and have fixed some defensive issues but still think they are very 1 dimensional and don't have enough. Panthers look the best on paper and are most complete team in the division. The problem here is Jake can't win big games. The Falcons have it all stud qb, stud rb, decent defense plus Tony Gonzo. Falcons win division but Panthers are playoff bound as well.

Falcons 12-4
Bucs 4-12
Panthers 11-5
Saints 8-8

NFC East
This is the most competitive division and I really have no clue how it will all play out. The redskins will improve again but without strong QB play they don't make it out of the NFC east. ELI was overpaid this summer and needs to prove why but I think he struggles not having Plaxico as he did last year after the incident. The Cowboys most talented team on paper in NFC but don't have coach or motivation to link it all together. The big screen blocking punts could be an amazing home field advantage. Eagles I love MIKE VICK and MCnabb, I want to be the guy who makes the plays for those 2. I am watching every Eagle game this season. Eagles win division but barely and every team in division has more than 7 wins.

Eagles 11-5
Cowboys 10-6
Giants 9-7
Redskins 7-9

NFC West
Rams and Seahawks are not doing anything this year so I won't waste time on them. Cardinals need to establish running game and get better defensively but offensively they scare every team in the league. However, I think Warner gets hurt this year and the Cards hopes end their. The Niners continue the success from last year put in consistent running and quarterback play. If they can manufacture a pass rush then there is no doubt about them winning the division but if not could be another long season for all us faithful. BTW Crabtree is an IDIOT.

Niners 10-6
Cardinals 9-7
Seahawks 5-11
Rams 4-12

AFC North
Cleveland struggles once again. Cincinnati will regain some form and I expect a great season from Palmer. Unfortunately with no D and Ravens and Steelers they go no where. I am not sold on Flaco and don't think the Ravens have enough offense to win the division. Steelers return it all but could be interesting to see how Ben handles his off court problems.

Steelers 13-3
Bengals 8-8
Ravens 7-9
Browns 3-13

AFC South
The Texans made no big moves and will continue to be on the basement of the division. The Jags will bounce back from last year but they are outclassed by the Colts and Titans. Colts lose the Dungy and his intangibles so I think they take a slight hit but will end the season strong. Titans have great running game and game changing d. Expect them to have another great season.

Titans 12-4
Colts 10-6
Jags 7-9
Texans 5-11

AFC East
Starting a rookie quarterback is to tough and sure Ryan did it but Sanchez won't be able to take Jets to playoffs yet. Dolphins and Bills will have subpar years. I hate to say it but easy division plus Brady back means big year for Moss and the Pats. They have very soft schedule as well and will run away with division.

Pats 14-2
Jets 7-9
Dolphins 6-10
Bills 4-12

AFC West
Chiefs are garbage. Raiders will probably have 5 knocked out assistants by end of year. Broncos have no defense and no QB to keep them in games. Chargers most talented team in league will cakewalk through the division. LT going to have big year.

Chargers 13-3
Raiders 6-10
Broncos 5-11
Chiefs 2-14

NFC Playoffs
1. Falcons
2. Eagles
3. Bears
4. Niners
5. Panthers
6. Cowboys

Round 1
Cowboys over Bears
Niners over Panthers

Round 2
Falcons over Cowboys
Eagles over Niners

Round 3
Falcons over Eagles

AFC Playoffs
1.Pats
2.Chargers
3.Steelers
4.Titans
5.Colts
6.Bengals

Round 1
Steelers over Bengals
Colts over Titans

Round 2
Colts over Pats
Chargers over Steelers

Round 3
Chargers over Colts.

Superbowl

So Superbowl 2010 Champs will be the NINERS!

Best Off Season Moves

Top 5 Off Season Moves

5. Magic - Pick up Vince Carter but lose Hedo. This move hurts the magic future but gives them a great chance to win the east for next 2 years. Hedo was a playmaker but Vince can create his own shot and be a go to guy at the end of the game. Magic were unable to close out games this year and Vince Carter could be the missing piece. The loss of Hedo gets rid of the horrible mismatch the Magic put on people but the return of Jameer and the addition give the Magic 4 all star candidates and you can't get much better then that in the nba. Still Stan Van Gundy loved Hedo and it will be interesting to see how the offense adjusts with Vince.

4. Celtics - Celtics won the championship 2 years ago and would have been right in the thick of things if KG was back. This year their defense was not at the level of last year and they lost interior depth. The addition of Rasheed Wallace is huge. He is getting older but knows how to play on both ends of the floor and can space out the floor even further. When him and KG are on the floor at the same time the celtics will be able to spread the floor for rondo and pierce drives. If rasheed and kg can stay healthy the celtics will be pretty scary.

3. Cavs - Picking up Shaq is always big news and it will be very interesting to see if he can be as active as he was last year. His liability pick and roll defense is still an issue especially joining a team that takes pride in its defense. But most likely in pick and roll situations the Cavs will play Andy V. On Offense he will need his touches but still needs attention and he will be getting tons of dunks from Lebron drives. He is motivated to be in great shape and to win a title with 3 of the best nba guards. It will be interesting to watch because lebron has never been teamed with anybody with Shaq's ego. Shaq loves warm weather cities but now he is in Ohio. Cavs needed to take the risk and they should be in the hunt for the eastern conference crown all of next year.

2. Lakers - Lakers just traded Ron Artest for Trevor Ariza and actually saved money. This is a no- brainer. Ariza was great and I loved him but he still was unreliable on the ball and loved to take the gamble. Ron Artest paired with Kobe will be able to stop any backcourt in the league. If they get lamar back they will be primed and the favorites for a repeat championship next year. Artest is improving as a three point shooter and will be getting more open looks next year. Jackson will also have a variety of bench units to use with different combination of starters. This trade is meant for the next three years and milking Kobe for all that he is worth. If Lamar comes back Lakers will win 70 games next season and the championship if he doesn't the race will be wide open with Lakers being one of the 5 contenders.

1. Spurs - Spurs are not getting enough credit for RJ trade who has averaged 20 points a season for several seasons. The spurs big three turns into a big four and unlike the bruce bowen days you cannot ignore RJ. If the spurs are healthy they will be contenders and have a young bench who is constantly improving. Just like the Lakers, the Spurs are going to try to be as competitive for Duncan's next 3 years. If Ginobili is healthy Spurs have the best chance at stopping the Lakers.

What Warriors need to do to ever be good.

I am tired of waiting on the Warriors to be good and watch bad decision and bad decision fail miserably. The Bay Area is popular area and many basketball players would love to play in the Bay but not for the Warriors who are now synonymous with the lottery.
I have followed the warriors since I was 4 and I remember the last 15 years relatively well. Based on the mistakes we have made I have outlined what we need to do to get better:
1. Fire Don Nelson - He hates rookies and young players, he is the worst coach to have on a young team that needs to gain experience. He doesn't know anything about defense and young players who have gotten by with pure athleticism need to learn how to play in the nba. Don Nelson does not know how to do that. He is good if a team is mature and has offensive power. He needs to go.

2. Figure out what style we want to play. We keep drafting players that are of the exact same position or exact same body type. I love Biedrins and B Wright but both are lanky skinny ball players. Monte and Stephen Curry are both shorter than 6' 3''. There needs to be a plan and we need to get personal that match that plan. I think we should still run and push the ball but need to be more organized in the half court. Instead of chucking up shots we have several players who can drive and create shots for the others.

3. Find a low post player. We have not had a low post player since Chris Webber who took us to the playoffs in 94. Go back to every team that has won in last 5 years they all had a solid low post presence. Lakers - Pau, Celtics- KG, Spurs- Duncan, Miami-Shaq, 2005 - Spurs Again, 2004- Wallaces. It is no big secret to win in the post season you need to dominate rebounds and have easy ways to score when you are not shooting well from the outside. Warriors need to bundle a guard plus bwright or biedrins for a big solid low post presence.

4. Get a defensive tone setter- Another key for every championship team. A veteran or a star who gets his minutes because of his d. We need a hustle defensive player who sets the tone and slows down the other teams best player every night. Stephen Jackson can be this player if he focuses more on defense instead of offense.

5. Create Excitement- Bay Area fans are some of the best fans make a big move get a star and the fans will be able to motivate and carry the team for 10-15 more wins. Baron Davis trade is perfect example of this.

6. Keep Money and spend more to keep stars. Warriors have made lot of draft mistakes but the few picks and trades that have gone right and have ended when players leave warriors because the team is not competitive and not willing to spend money. Ex. Jamison, Arenas, Davis and lot more.

7. Keep core of Ellis, Curry, (Bwright or Biedrins), Jackson, (Morrow or Belinelli). Package Magette, Bwright, and any other player for up and coming big man like David lee, Amare. Sign free agents like Andy V. Or dump all salaries and go for Bosh in 2010. But figure out how the hell to get a big guy.

Finals Prediction

Two of my favorite teams are meeting in the finals this year! Obviously I am rooting for the Lakers but there are many matchups in this series that favor the Magic. This series is going to go down to the wire but I am predicting that the Lakers will pull it out in 6.
Here is my breakdown of the series:

Point Guard:
Phil Jackson needs to stop playing D fish. I love fish but his time is done. Phil is not going to bench him but expect to see a lot of Farmar and Brown guarding Alston, and Johnson respectively. The key for the Laker guards are to stop dribble penetration.

On the magic side when Alston is hot the magic play extremely well. There have been rumors that Nelson might be able to come back for the finals. Jameer is a horrible matchup for the Lakers and would be a big boost to the Magic if he can play. The key for the Magic point guards is to get as much dribble penetration and to make open shots.

Advantage: Magic

Shooting Guard:
The magic have no answer for Kobe. Expect to see a lot of Pietrus. What will be interesting to see is if the Magic use double teams. They did not double team Lebron that much so I expect to see a lot of one on one defense from Pietrus.
Advantage: Lakers

Small Forward:
Trevor Ariza will guard a lot of different players in this series. His offense and ability to stay out of foul trouble will be very important for the Lakers. Hedo on the other hand is the Magic's closer. In the Playoffs he has not been shooting particularly well but he has been making shots at all the right times. For Orlando Hedo needs to shoot well and keep the floor stretched out. His dribble penetration will be another key.

Edge: Slight Edge Magic

Power Forward:
The Power Forward matchup matches Pau Gasol and Rashard Lewis. Gasol plays more like a Center, and Rashard more like a small forward. This matchup will be the most interesting because the Lakers will have to decide who guard Rashad and likewise the Magic will have to decide who guards Pau because as the matchup stands it is a huge mismatch both ways. The Lakers have Lamar Odom who is versatile enough to guard Rashad but the Magic will have to decide if they want to use Gortat or double teams to guard Pau.

Edge: Lakers

Center:
Unlike the Cavaliers, the Lakers have a lot of big bodies to throw at Dwight Howard. The Lakers will need to make sure to foul Dwight and make him make free throws and limit his dunks. On offense Lakers will need to attack Dwight and try to get him in foul trouble. Gortat is a skilled backup but he is the only other Magic player who can control the paint.

Edge: Magic

Bench:
Magic Bench is led by Pietrus who will see a lot of minutes guarding Kobe. His corner three killed the Cavs and the Lakers will have to make sure he does not get good looks. If Nelson returns he could be a huge help for the Magic bench which is not particularly explosive. Gortat is solid and can score on the pick and roll.

The Lakers Bench has been a different story every game and it is unclear what kind of production the Lakers will get in the finals. Lamar, Brown, Farmar, Vujacic, and Luke will all play. Powell will also be used for fouls on Dwight. Expect Lamar to close out games and Brown and Farmar to get extensive minutes.

Edge: Slight Edge Lakers

Coach: Phil has the experience but no longer makes many adjustments within series. Stan Van Gundy will run many plays and try out a variety of strategies. However in the Finals I think Phil's calm style and experience and control over the team will win the series.
Edge: Lakers

My keys to the series:

Lakers:
Get Howard off the court
No Dunks for Howard
No Open three pointers
Pound the Ball Inside
Fast Break Points
100% Effort Every Game
Role Players Shoot well

Magic:
Keep Howard on the Court
Dribble Penetration
Contain Kobe
Shoot above 40% from 3 point line
Transition Defense

Biggest Questions:
The starting lineups have a lot of mistmatches for both teams who will make the lineup changes first? Who will guard Rashad and Hedo? Who will guard Pau?

In the end the Lakers experience and defense will win the series. If La controls the paint and speed that will compensate for the Magic's great 3 point defense. The Lakers have more offensive weapons than the Magic and the size advantage. I expect the Lakers to win the 2009 Championship in 6!

Nba Reffing

Nba reffing is horrible. Every single playoff referee is over 60 years old. How can we trust 60 year old referees to keep up with arguably the fastest sport in the game. Their eye site is horrible and they are not close enough to make the correct calls. But beyond the referees being senile the nba has bigger problems. Why do they keep calling fragrant fouls and then downgrading them, why do they keep rescinding technicals. Why are non-calls in the first quarter fouls in the fourth quarter and why are there 45 fouls in one game and 135 fouls in another game between the same two teams running the exact same offenses? The refs are horrible and I am going to join Bill Simmons and say that we need to start a revolution and demand more.

Here are my suggestions:

Kobe keeps saying this but go back to more physical play. Today's athlete can score with coincidental contact. Too many fouls are called in the nba that are completely meaningless. Players start expecting these calls and whining about any kind of incidental contact. Soccer has a similar problem with diving, once players have success they will whine and act more and more. Now acting and gamesmanship is unavoidable but we can stop it from ruining basketball.

The changes:
1. Coincidental contact is not a foul.
2. The offensive player cannot jump into the defensive player and draw a foul, this is a non-call.
3.A referee fund is created to train players who don't make nba or whose careers end early to be referees in the league.
4. Refereese go through NBDL games learning how to be NBA referees. The program is extremely competitive and only the best referees make it. Referees are also given consistency grades and are graded on how they call games with respect to the nba rules.
5. Each player is given a handbook on what a technical foul is. If they do anything that is in the handbook they receive a technical. Make technicals as objective as possible.
6. Each team is given a remove one foul card which can be used at any point to remove one foul from any player. Only one per game. This way bullshit calls don't change an entire game by putting a guy in foul trouble. Hopefully this bad call will not exist but this is insurance.
7. When offensive players are clearly passing the other team cannot take a charge.
8. Kickball is only called when the player actually kicks the ball I know this is the rule but the refs miss this call all the time.
9. Only the head coach and captain of each team are allowed to talk to the referee during the game. (Every single player whines in the league on every play)

Kobe versus Lebron

Lebron or Kobe, Kobe or Lebron

Tons of people have had heated discussions about Kobe and Lebron over last couple weeks as the NBA tries to hype and market a dream marketing final. The two top selling and most popular nba players, the two reigning MVPs, the two leaders of the summer Olympic gold medal team going head to head for the championship but more than that the individual title of the World’s best basketball player. I am here to clarify all issues and settle this debate once and for all. Before I start you should know I am a die heart laker fan who loves Kobe but I am also a huge lebron fan.

First lets clear up what the hell World’s best basketball player means. Does that mean most dominant, most well-rounded, best one-on one player, best team player? What we want is some overall combination of everything I mentioned. We want to give an individual title in a team sport so we must value both individual skill as well as what the player brings to the team in terms of intangibles and improving the overall quality of the team.

Kobe Bryant is the most skilled basketball player in the game and has mastered every single shot possible in basketball. He has no weaknesses and drives equally to his left and to his right. He has a strong post game, mid-range, and has an above average 3 point shooting percentage. He has mastered every single shot and has no clear weakness in his offensive game. On defense he is an excellent free safety, great at ball denial and a perennial pick for first team all defense. His game is pretty and fluid and it has been perfected through repetition and tons of practice.

Lebron James is an animal, a beast, a freak of nature. His body type has never been seen in the nba. His football linebacker body is perfect for an NBA Power Forward. However, his speed and explosiveness match the quickest guards in the game. If you were to create the ideal player in NBA LIVE 99 strength, 99 speed, 99 explosiveness you get King James. Somehow he got all that strength and size without losing any speed. Lebron is a one of a kind physically blessed athlete. The league has never seen a player with his physical attributes. Lebron does not have a consistent jumpshot, and lacks a perfected mid-range and post up game. However, his physical attributes cover any weaknesses and make him the most dominant player in the game. His size and speed make him a tremendous defensive player as well.

Practice makes perfect but god given attributes trump practice. Teams have seen Kobe like players before. No one matches Kobe’s skill and there are still no clear ways to defend him but you know what to expect and there are athletes that can make him less effective. Kobe’s repertoire also includes many jumpshots in addition to drives which give him an average field goal percentage of 47-48%. On the other hand Lebron shoots above 50% and is in a league of his own. No matter who is guarding him there is already a physical mismatch. In Kobe’s case the mismatch is just skill wise.

In addition to Lebron being more efficient he also has a very likeable and contagious personality that makes him a great teammate. The knock that was always on Jordan was that he was a horrible teammate, Kobe gets this a lot as well. Jordan and Kobe both understand the power of teammates but also knew that when it comes down to it they would make the plays necessary to win and no one in the world could stop them. Lebron is more similar to Magic and does not have that same competitive one on one edge that Kobe and Jordan were born with. Lebron’s numbers show that he controls pretty much every part of the box score while Kobe’s numbers are not as balanced.

As the debate goes on even the biggest Kobe Bryant fan must concede that Lebron is more well-rounded and more dominant. Lebron is a rare specimen that the league has never seen. He has the perfect build for basketball and the passion and contagious personality last seen by Magic Johnson. Everybody loves him. He has already been named King and 3-4 years from now we will start arguing he is the greatest player of all time. However, to be considered great longevity and health are essential. Players are judged on entire careers and not on individual seasons.

These last few points make it clear that if I wanted to start a team today I take Lebron because of his age, physical attributes, and contagious personality. However, the crown for better career cannot be given until King James provides more statistics. If he continues to improve as he has done the past few seasons, then we all truly will be witnesses. King James the possibilities are infinite.

Before we end the debate we must also give Kobe credit where he deserves it. Kobe is the games best closer and if I need a basket I still pick him over Lebron because he is familiar with every spot on the court and can shoot a high percentage shot from anywhere. Furthermore Kobe is a better scorer and Lebron will never score 81 in a game. But basketball is not about only one possession it is about the entire game and all of the teammates who play on the court the entire game. When we consider all these factors Lebron does more to a game than Kobe does. The King is the new MVP and could be there for a long time to come. Kobe’s prime is coming to an end and unfortunately the media robbed him of two mvp’s. I am a die heart (I like die heart better than diehard ) laker fan but with the new nba rules the King is going to dominate this league for a long time.
